City & Guilds Entry Level 1 Certificate in Food Studies

Course content

The course is made up of 4 units:

  • Health, safety and hygiene
  • Select and use appropriate basic kitchen equipment
  • Identify the main food groups
  • Prepare food, cook food and clean work areas and equipment

Who is the course for?

The qualification is suitable for candidates who wish to develop and improve their ability to prepare and cook food for themselves whilst also learning about the catering industry. Candidates undertaking this qualification may not necessarily be seeking employment within the hospitality industry but will be looking to develop everyday cooking skills. It is suitable for candidates from all backgrounds and is appropriate for adults as well as young people. This qualification is only available to people aged 16-18 (or up to 24 with an Education, Health & Care Plan).

Assessment method

All units are assessment based. The course is made up of theory and practical lessons, and candidates will have to pass all units to achieve the certificate.

Entry requirements

Students must have basic reading and writing skills.

Future opportunities / career options

Progression is to Entry Level 2 Certificate in Food Studies.

Course Fees

Courses are free for all students aged 16 – 18 (or up to 24 if you declare a disability and have an Education, Health & Care Plan).
