Course content

Reading

  • identify main points and how they are presented in different texts
  • Understand texts in detail
  • Read and understand texts and take appropriate action

Writing

  • Write clearly and coherently including an appropriate level of detail
  • Present information in a logical sequence
  • Use language format and structure suitable for purpose and audience
  • Use correct grammar including subject/verb agreement and correct and consistent use of tense
  • Ensure written work includes accurate grammar, punctuation and spelling and that meaning is clear

Speaking & Listening

  • Make relevant contributions to discussions
  • Prepare for and contribute to formal discussion of ideas and opinions
  • Be flexible in discussions, making different kinds of contributions
  • Present information clearly and in appropriate language

Who is the course for?

This course is suitable for students who:

  • have achieved Entry Level 3 Functional Skills
  • are taking a vocational course for which English is required
  • would like to brush up on their GCSE English skills in order to start a vocational programme

Assessment method

At the end of the course there will be two paper based tests (Reading & Writing) and 2 recorded conversations for Speaking & Listening. You will have one hour to answer each paper test. You sit both papers on the same day. The exam papers are sent off to the exam board for marking so you can expect your results about a month after sitting the exam. There will then be an opportunity to discuss progression routes.

To start on this course you need to show at initial assessment that this is a suitable level for your current skills.

Future opportunities / career options

This course prepares you for progression to the Level 2 Functional Skills English course (equivalent to an A – C / 9 – 4 grade GCSE) or for progression to a Level 2 vocational course.
