Course content

The aim of the course is to train learners to a professionally competent level, enabling them to prescribe, plan and deliver safe and effective exercise sessions within a gym or health club environment.

Units include:

  • Anatomy and physiology for exercise
  • Know how to support clients who take part in exercise and physical activity
  • Health, safety and welfare in a fitness environment
  • Principles of exercise, fitness and health
  • Developing self in an active leisure job role
  • Planning gym-based exercise
  • Instructing gym-based exercise

Who is the course for?

  • Students aged 16+
  • Those considering a career as a fitness instructor
  • Please note that 16-18 year olds may need to be supervised in the workplace, once they have achieved the qualification

Assessment method

Portfolio of Units to be assessed against the National Occupational Standards. Evidence to include:

  • Exams
  • Worksheets
  • Case Studies
  • Observations

Entry requirements

  • No specific entry requirements in exercise and fitness
  • The course requires physical exertion and individual participation is essential; therefore, a degree of physical fitness is necessary
  • There is also an element of communication (discussing, presenting, reading and writing) involved and learners should have good skills in communication pitched at Level 2
  • Have achieved or are working towards a level 1 qualification in Functional Skills Maths / English
  • Have a keen interest in working to help others improve their fitness
  • Be competent in the use of ICT

Future opportunities / career options

On successful completion, students:

  • have the opportunity to apply for employment within the fitness industry
  • Active IQ Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training

When is the course run?

September 2018

Students must be able to commit to some independent study time in preparation for the exams, worksheets and their case studies.

Students must be flexible in their approach to assessments and assessment feedback.

Course Fees

Courses are free for all students aged 16 – 18 (or up to 24 if you declare a disability and have an Education, Health & Care Plan).
