Course content

The course will include working on the following topics:

  • Calculations with large numbers and combined positive and negative numbers
  • Calculations of perimeter, area and volume of compound shapes
  • Calculations with fractions, decimals and percentages in practical situations, including percentage change
  • Using ratio, including scale drawing
  • Chance of events happening expressed as a fraction, decimal or percentage
  • Use formulae to resolve problems
  • Measurements, including converting between metric units and imperial units
  • Handling data, including line graphs, scatter graphs, comparative bar charts and pie charts
  • Statistics: mean, mode median and range

Who is the course for?

This course is suitable for students who:

  • have achieved Level 1 Functional Skills
  • are taking a vocational course for which maths is needed
  • would like to brush up on their GCSE maths skills in order to start a vocational programme

Assessment method

At the end of the course there will be a paper based test which will cover all topics. You will be allowed to use a calculator in the test, and will have an hour and a half to answer all the questions. You must attend on the day at the time of your exam. The exam will last 2 hours. The exam papers are sent off to the exam board for marking so you can expect your results about a month after sitting the exam. There will then be an opportunity to discuss progression routes.

Entry requirements

To start on this course you need to show at Initial Assessment that this is a suitable level for your current skills. You will be asked to complete a diagnostic assessment to confirm that this is the correct level.

This course prepares you for progression to:

  • Maths GCSE
  • Any course where an entry requirement is a Level 2 maths qualification
  • Level 3 vocational course requiring Level 2 maths
