English – Appreciate reading: A mini book club

What is the aim of the course?

To support reading and the development of reading skills.

Who is this course for?

  • Liverpool adults aged 19 or above who declare a mild or moderate learning difficulty and/or disability.
  • Unemployed adults, those on limited contract or at risk of redundancy

Prior qualifications needed for this course


Before I start the course I must be able to:

Complete a short English assessment in first session.

Is there a follow on course I can take once I have finished?

Functional skills or GCSE English course.

What would a typical session look like?

  • Read short stories and/or poems together
  • Discuss context, characters, likes and dislikes in the class
  • Progress to reading books (some in own time) & discuss books
  • Keep a short reading journal

How will I know that I am progressing?

Each learner will have a Personal Progress Diary which he or she will update briefly during each session.  In addition to this your tutor will give you regular updates on your progress both verbally and in written feedback

At the end of the course you will have a better understanding of the following objectives:

  • Appreciation of and ability to read a range of short stories and poems
    Improved reading skills.
  • Ability to discuss what has been read and express views with confidence.
