Ascentis Level 2 Award, Extended Award and Certificate in English Skills

Course content

Students complete one unit out of those below. A tutor will recommend, following discussions, the most appropriate units to study, based on individual English skills profile.

Reading

  • read and understand a variety of texts
  • identify stated or inferred meaning and purpose
  • summarise key information
  • recognise points of view
  • compare ideas from different sources

Writing

  • write in a variety of styles for different audiences and purposes
  • use format and structure to organise their writing
  • use the length and detail required
  • proofread written work
  • produce legible text

Spelling and vocabulary

  • use word roots, prefixes and suffixes to aid correct spelling
  • identify correct use of homophones
  • use synonyms, antonyms and figures of speech to enhance writing skills
  • recognise and use technical words, especially those linked to their own vocational areas

Grammar and Punctuation

  • learn how to construct grammatically correct complex sentences
  • recognise how punctuation helps to make meaning clear
  • be able to proofread and revisit written work

Receiving and Responding to Information

  • obtain information, form others by identifying key information and responding relevantly
  • contribute positively to conversation using appropriate strategies
  • respond to, and criticise, others in a positive way

 Speaking

  • express themselves clearly in a range of situations, obtaining relevant information when required
  • engage confidently in discussion, adapting and supporting their contributions

Who is the course for?

People aged 16 – 18

People aged up to 24 who declare a disability and have an EHC Plan

This is a stepping stone qualification and is aimed at learners who may have gained an Level 2 qualification but may need some additional time to develop their English skills before moving up to the next level.

Assessment method

There will be exams at the end of this course.
