
Functional Skills Qualification in English (Entry 1)
The Entry Level 1 English course is ideal for learners who want to improve their reading and writing skills, either for work or further study.
What will I study?
Reading
- Understand short texts on familiar topics and experiences
- Read and understand simple, regular words
Writing
- Use written words and phrases to present information
- Construct simple sentences and punctuate using capital letters and full stops
- Spell correctly some personal or very familiar words
Speaking & Listening
- Understand the main points of short explanations and listen for specific information
- Follow instructions
- Respond appropriately to comments and requests
- Make contributions clearly to be heard and understood
- Ask questions using appropriate terms to obtain specific information
Who is the course for?
- People aged 16 – 18
- People aged up to 24 who declare a disability and have an EHC Plan
- Adults aged 19+ (if studying towards a vocational qualification)
The course is suitable for learners who:
- have not yet achieved Entry Level 1 Functional skills
- are taking a vocational course for which English is needed
- would like to brush up on their English skills in order to start a vocational programme
What are the entry requirements?
To start the course you need to show at Initial assessment that this is a suitable level for your current skills.
How will I be assessed?
At the end of the course there will be two paper based tests (Reading & Writing) and 2 documented conversations for Speaking & Listening.

After you have achieved the Entry Level 1 English qualification, you could progress to:
