Course content
Reading
- Read and understand straightforward texts
- Read and understand instructions & directions
- Read and understand common spelling patterns
- Use knowledge of alphabetical order to locate information
Writing
- Use written words and phrases to record information
- Use compound sentences, capital letters, full stops and question marks
- Spell a range of common words correctly
- Produce legible text
Speaking & Listening
- Identify the main points in discussion
- Speak clearly to be heard and understood
- Express one’s own feelings and listen to others
- Express statements of fact, short accounts and descriptions
- Ask and respond to straightforward questions
- Contribute to discussions
At the end of the course there will be two paper based tests (Reading & Writing) and 2 recorded conversations for Speaking & Listening. You will have 45 minutes to answer each paper test. You can take the tests on different days. You will get your results in the same week and guidance about progression routes.
Who is the course for?
- People aged 16 – 18
- People aged up to 24 who declare a disability and have an EHC Plan
- Adults aged 19+
This course is suitable for students who:
- have achieved Entry Level 1 Functional Skills
- are taking a vocational course for which English is required
- would like to brush up on their English skills in order to start a vocational programme
