Functional Skills Qualification in English (Entry 2)

The Entry Level 2 English course is ideal for learners who want to improve their reading and writing skills, either for work or further study. 

What will I study?

Reading

  • Read and understand straightforward texts
  • Read and understand instructions & directions
  • Read and understand common spelling patterns
  • Use knowledge of alphabetical order to locate information

Writing

  • Use written words and phrases to record information
  • Use compound sentences, capital letters, full stops and question marks
  • Spell a range of common words correctly
  • Produce legible text

Speaking & Listening

  • Identify the main points in discussion
  • Speak clearly to be heard and understood
  • Express one’s own feelings and listen to others
  • Express statements of fact, short accounts and descriptions
  • Ask and respond to straightforward questions
  • Contribute to discussions

Who is the course for?

  • People aged 16 – 18
  • People aged up to 24 who declare a disability and have an EHC Plan
  • Adults aged 19+ (if studying towards a vocational qualification)

This course is suitable for students who:

  • have achieved Entry Level 1 Functional Skills
  • are taking a vocational course for which English is required
  • would like to brush up on their English skills in order to start a vocational programme

What are the entry requirements?

To start on this course you need to show at initial assessment that this is a suitable level for your current skills.

How will I be assessed?

At the end of the course there will be two paper based tests (Reading & Writing) and 2 recorded conversations for Speaking & Listening.

How much will the course cost?

English qualifications are free for everyone up to Level 2.
