Course content

The Level 1 Hairdressing and Barbering course is designed for students who are new to the industry and have little or no experience of hairdressing and barbering. The qualification provides the necessary skills and knowledge that will allow you to enter employment in the hairdressing sector.

Training takes place in our on-site salon, Salon HQ which will give your the opportunity to gain valuable work experience whilst you learn.

You will be assessed throughout the course to check on your progress in a variety of ways. This includes observations, oral questions and online tests.

Units

Mandatory

  • Prepare for hair services and maintain work areas
  • Contribute to the development of effective working relationships
  • Blow dry hair
  • Shampoo and condition hair

Optional

  • Assist with salon reception duties
  • Plait and twist hair using basic techniques

Who is the course for?

  • People aged 16 – 18
  • People aged up to 24 who declare a disability and have an EHC Plan

Entry requirements

  • Achieved or are working towards qualifications in English and maths at Entry 3.

Progression

  • Level 2 Diploma in Hairdressing
  • Employment in a salon as a Junior Stylist, Hairdressing Assistant or Barbering Assistant

Study Programme

If you are aged 16 – 18 or up to 24 who declare a disability and have an EHC Plan, this course will form part of your study programme. The programme also includes English and maths qualifications, employability skills, a work placement and other personal development and enrichment opportunities.

Course Fees

Courses are free for all students aged 16 – 18 (or up to 24 for those who declare a disability and have an EHC Plan).

For people aged 19+ the course fee is £941. You may be eligible for fee remission. See Money Matters for details.
