Level 1 NVQ Certificate in Hairdressing and Barbering (City & Guilds)
The Level 1 Hairdressing and Barbering course is designed for students who are new to the industry and have little or no experience of hairdressing. The course provides the necessary skills and knowledge that will allow you to enter employment in the hairdressing sector. Training takes place in our on-site salon, Salon HQ which will give your the opportunity to gain valuable work experience whilst you learn.
What will I study?
Mandatory units
- Prepare for hair services and maintain work areas
- Contribute to the development of effective working relationships
- Blow dry hair
- Shampoo and condition hair
Optional units
- Assist with salon reception duties
- Plait and twist hair using basic techniques
Who is the course for?
- People aged 16 – 18
- People aged up to 24 who declare a disability and have an EHC Plan
- 19+
What are the entry requirements?
- Achieved or are working towards qualifications in English and Maths at Entry 3.
How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed throughout the course to check on your progress in a variety of ways. This includes observations, oral questions and online tests.
What could I progress to?
After you have achieved the Level 1 Hairdressing and Barbering qualification, you could progress to:
- Level 2 VRQ Certificate in Hairdressing
- Traineeships
- Apprenticeship
- Employment / volunteering

What is a Study Programme?
If you are aged 16 – 18 or up to 25, declare a disability and have an EHC Plan this course will form part of your study programme.
