Course content

The course will include working on the following topics:

  • Calculations with whole numbers and negative numbers
  • Calculating perimeter, area and volume
  • Fractions, decimals and percentages in practical situations
  • Using ratio and scale drawing
  • Chance of events happening
  • Solving problems involving time and money
  • Measurements, including converting metric units
  • Handling data, including line graphs and pie charts
  • Statistics: mean and range

Who is the course for?

This course is suitable for students who:

  • have achieved Entry Level 3 Functional Skills
  • are taking a vocational course for which maths is needed
  • would like to brush up on their GCSE maths skills in order to start a vocational programme

Assessment method

At the end of the course there will be a paper based test which will cover all topics. You will be allowed to use a calculator in the test. You will have an hour and a half to answer all the questions. You must attend on the day at the time of your exam.

The exam papers are sent off to the exam board for marking so you can expect your results about a month after sitting the exam. There will then be an opportunity to discuss progression routes.

Entry requirements

To start on this course you need to show at Initial Assessment that this is a suitable level for your current skills.  You will be asked to complete a diagnostic assessment to confirm that this is the correct level.

Future opportunities / career options

This course prepares you for progression to Level 2 Mathematics.
