This Level 3 Sport course covers the underpinning knowledge for the sport sector and supporting progression to employment or an apprenticeship in the sport sector or to a further year of study at Level 3. It supports progression to higher education if taken as part of a programme of study that includes other BTEC Nationals or A/AS Levels.

What will I study?

To achieve the qualification, you will need to complete all mandatory units plus 1 optional unit for the Extended Certificate and 3 optional units for the Foundation Diploma.

Who is the course for?

  • People aged 16 – 18
  • People aged up to 24 who declare a disability and have an EHC Plan
  • 19+

What are the entry requirements?

Extended Certificate

  • 4 GCSES Grades 4 and above / A-C, preferably including English Language and Maths. Each individual learner / grade profile will be reviewed for their suitability for the course.
  • Preferably a related qualification e.g. NCFE / BTEC Level 2 Sport qualifications.
  • A genuine interest in future careers in Sport Coaching / Sport Development or Higher Education studies in related fields.

Foundation Diploma

  • 5 GCSEs at grades 9–4 (A*–C), including English Language and Maths – both of these must be grades 9–4 (A*–C) or Functional Skills Level 2 in English and Maths.
  • You can also gain a place by having a relevant Level 2 vocational qualification with English and Maths GCSE grades 9–4 (A*–C).
  • A genuine interest in future careers in Sport Coaching / Sport Development / or Higher Education studies in related fields.

How will I be assessed?

Methods of assessment include observations, assignments, group, individual written tasks and examinations . A portfolio of evidence will be developed and units assessed at agreed points of the course. There are also work experience opportunities provided in assisting at Greenbank Sports Academy.

How much will the course cost?

Courses are free for all students aged 16 – 18 (or up to 24 if you declare a disability and have an Education, Health & Care Plan).

For people aged 19+ the course fees are:

Foundation Diploma – £2882*
