Supporting students and employers with work placements

Why are work placements so important for our students?
No matter how good a course is it will never be able to teach how things work in the real world. Going on a work placement provides practical experience that compliments the skills a student learns in the classroom and offers an opportunity for them to try out their chosen career. It also helps to build confidence and enhances their CV.
What do employers get out of it?
By taking on students on work placements, employers are helping to ensure the workforce of the future is well trained and possess the appropriate skills for the business. For current staff, it is a good way of gaining or improving management skills through supervision and training of the student. Taking on a student on a work placement is also a good way of recruiting new staff.
What our students say
“I really enjoyed my placement at Barnardos. I was really nervous about going out to an employer, but needn’t have worried so much. The Placement Officer worked with the staff to make sure I was settling in and came to see me on a regular basis. The staff were all helpful and friendly to me as well. I have gained lots of work experience and I’m glad I went.”
