Thank you to all of our students and staff, for their contributions to this year’s World Book Day event at Greenbank College.

We had a fantastic response to the request from the College’s Functional Skills Co-ordinator, Jacqui Maylor, to subject departments to create a display representing a book of their choice.

All of the displays were impressive and extremely creative and the choice of books wide:

Hairdressing – a 3d display representing ‘George’s Marvellous Medicine’ by Roald Dahl

Functional Skills English – a display of facts about Stephen King and a project to write to the author

Functional Skills Maths – a display of prime numbers inspired by chapter numbering used in ‘The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time’ by Mark Haddon

Functional Skills Maths – incorporating books into an Entry 1 class by measuring books, comparing the number of pages and having a class discussion

Exercise and Fitness – a study of Muhammad Ali based on his biography ‘His life and Times’ by Thomas Hauser

Employability – display about ‘Girl Online’ by Zoe Sugg

Catering – facts about ‘Of Mice and Men’ by John Steinbeck

IT – a synopsis of ‘The Colour Purple’ by Alice Walker

Gardening – A window display representing the Harry Potter series of books by JK Rowling

Health and Social Care – a whole class room display incorporating images inspired by ‘The Cat in the Hat’ by Dr Zeus – chosen because of the book incorporates psychological perspective and its link to Health and Social Care.

Textiles – ‘Alice in Wonderland’ by Lewis Carroll inspired drawings

Customer Service – A poster highlighting why books are great and other displays containing facts about Sherlock Holmes, the Divergent and Harry Potter series of books. 2 students also dressed as their favourite book character.

Jacqui said:

“I’m overwhelmed by the effort that some students and staff have put into their displays and the very varied approach to my World Book Day challenge – thanks to everyone involved.”

Although the initial concept was just for fun, we decided that the effort made by Business Administration student Joanne Butcher’s should be recognised. Joanne had worked in class to create a ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ by Roald Dahl poster but was not due in College on World book Day.

She was so engaged in the challenge that she bought five copies of the book herself and created envelopes to be given to the other students – 5 of which contained a golden ticket, which could be exchanged for a book. She paid for these to be taxied to College.

Joanne has been given a £20 book token as a thank you.
