Functional Skills Qualification in English at Level 1

The Level 1 English course is ideal for learners who want to improve their reading and writing skills, either for work or further study.

What will I study?

Reading

Identify main points and how they are presented in different texts
Understand texts in detail
Read and understand texts and take appropriate action

Writing

Write clearly and coherently including an appropriate level of detail
Present information in a logical sequence
Use language format and structure suitable for purpose and audience
Use correct grammar including subject/verb agreement and correct and consistent use of tense
Ensure written work includes accurate grammar, punctuation and spelling and that meaning is clear

Speaking & Listening

Make relevant contributions to discussions
Prepare for and contribute to formal discussion of ideas and opinions
Be flexible in discussions, making different kinds of contributions
Present information clearly and in appropriate language

Who is the course for?

People aged 16 – 18
People aged up to 24 who declare a disability and have an EHC Plan
Adults aged 19+ (if studying towards a vocational qualification)

This course is suitable for students who:

have achieved Entry Level 3 Functional Skills
are taking a vocational course for which English is required

What are the entry requirements?

To start on this course you need to show at initial assessment that this is a suitable level for your current skills.

How will I be assessed?

At the end of the course there will be two paper based tests (Reading & Writing) and 2 recorded conversations for Speaking & Listening.
