Our Functional Skills Coordinator, Owen Burns, is not just an amazing tutor. He is also a musician.
Owen had the initiative to organise and host a weekly Open Mic session every Friday lunchtime in the Rathbone Room to give musical students a creative outlet and fill the college with music, and our first week did not disappoint!
First up was one of our learners Craig, who strummed and jammed along to “Brown-Eyed Girl” by Van Morrison. His energy and openness was a joy to watch and listen to.
Next up was Eleanor. Eleanor blew us all away with an original composition entitled “I can’t help it”. It combined haunting vocal melodies with tastefully-delivered guitar playing followed by interludes of rap which took us all by surprise.
We want to celebrate the generosity and bravery of Craig and Eleanor, who not only overcame their anxiety to get up and perform, but also shared their talent and creativity with us.
